My god, that is plain stupid, almost as stupid as this actual Ohio law making it illegal to fish for whales on Sunday.

Aw man, now you tell me.
I was planning on going whale fishing this sunday!
What a bummer
From the short list of Ohio's Um Uh "most unusual laws"
In Ohio, if you ignore an orator on Decoration day to such an extent as to publicly play croquet or pitch horseshoes within one mile of the speaker's stand, you can be fined $25.
Women are prohibited from wearing patent leather shoes in public.
It is illegal to fish for whales on Sunday.
It is illegal to get a fish drunk.
The Ohio driver's education manual states that you must honk the horn whenever you pass another car.
Participating or conducting a duel is prohibited.
Breast feeding is not allowed in public.
It is illegal for more than five women to live in a house.
When I was living in Baltimore, I knew a married couple who was asked by a prospective landlord for "proof of marriage" because she had kept her maiden name.
And that was perfectly legal at the time, don't know whether it still is. But it was discretionary on the landlord, most wouldn't care as long as you can pay.
And of course a landlord is allowed to discriminate on the basis of ability to pay, a lot of places require that you be employed before they will let you sign a lease agreement.
So, if YOU own the property, should you be able to discriminate on other things? What other things?
<font size="2" face="Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif">So if a man and his wife had five daughters, it would be technically illegal for them all to live in the same house? I call shenanigans. Please give me references as to city or state codes on these laws.Originally posted by cincygreg:

Every state has silly, antiquated and otherwise useless laws on the books. The fact that this municipality in MO is actually enforcing such bullshit makes my skin crawl. Everyday one can see more and more the USA becoming a ditatorship of idiocy. If it isn't the morality police trying to "save" us from gay marriage, or some other issue it's some further infringement of our rights in the name of "security". As Trav has said in his sig line "Those who would trade their freedom for security deserve neither" The far right has abused its position in power and needs to be tossed out on its ear to think about whom they are supposed to be serving. This is one card carrying Republican who will be voting Democratic in 2008, simply to change direction. I know this thread was about a stupid local ordinance, but it is simply a manifestation of larger trends. Trends that need to be stopped before its too late IMHO.
I disagree, things like this and many other ?conservative? ideas are making a comeback because of the current lose liberal policies and inappropriate behavior in our culture. The pendulum is just swinging back the other way and while there may be some reaction to Bush?s fuck ups this year and possibly in 2008 the trend will only continue.
While sometimes I play a rabid fundy here actually I disagree with a lot of the Republican?s planks. So then why do I continually vote Republican (especially for a southern boy)? I think it?s for the same reason many other people in this country do, it?s because the Democrats have made themselves the party of entitlements, victims, and the radical disenfranchised. The Democratic Party has lose its moral soul, I doubt Harry Truman or John Kennedy would recognize today?s Democrats.
Let?s look at some issues and tell me which party (not person) you think has the right policies:
Patriotism
Immigration
Taxes
Crime
Terrorism
Family values (see below)
Soon some smart Republican will figure out a way to separate ?family values? from both the gay rights and abortion rights issues. I believe there are a lot of people who think like I do when it comes to this problem. I have a very conservative viewpoint but I also believe in states (personal) rights so how does this affect my voting decisions regarding two major issues?
Abortion ? While I believe that abortion is morally wrong I also believe that it is a woman?s right to choose. This seemingly puts me in a quandary, right? No, not at all, the issue for me is government intrusion. I would much rather have the government intrude on someone else?s rights and stop her abortion then intrude on my rights and use my tax dollars to pay for what I believe is the murder of an unborn human being. So as long as the Democrats continue to insist that I have to pay for someone else?s abortion I will vote Republican.
Gay rights ? I have no problem with gay people, my daughter has a female partner, my closest cousin (best man at my wedding) was gay and died from aids, I have gay friends, I live in Northside and I enjoy the gay pride parade. All that would make an outside observer think I support the Democrat?s policy on gay and lesbian rights, but in practice I don?t. Why? Just because someone is attracted to someone of the same sex does not entitlement them to any more or any less human rights and dignity then someone who is attracted to someone of the opposite sex. A perfect example is the hate crime laws. Why do we need them? Isn?t an assault an assault? Does the victim get more injuries if the criminal yells fag while he is kicking him? Is an assault of a gay man by a straight man worse then an assault of a woman by a straight man? Wouldn?t we all be safer and better served if our justice system was effective and punished criminals according to their crimes? I never will understand why we have to worry about the criminal?s rights, have all these early releases and plea bargains and then have to create ridicules specialized laws to insure that a criminal gets what he/she deserves. Once again it?s the entitlement and victimhood mentality fostered by the liberal mindset and the Democrat?s policies that makes me vote Republican.
I vote Republican because to be a Democrat, I would have to become a victim. The policies or mistakes of one person or one administration will not change that.

I think Libertarian may be the better route, but damnit they never get anywhere with their candidates.
I just think the GOP has been taken hostage by the bible thumping far right, while the Democrats are way too far to the left. Both parties suck anymore.
Florida Teenager Is Sentenced to 30 Years for Gun Possession

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) -- Lionel Tate was sentenced Thursday to 30 years in prison for violating probation, the latest legal twist for the teenager convicted of murdering a 6-year-old girl in what his attorneys initially claimed was a pro wrestling move.
In the latest case, Tate had faced 10 to 30 years in prison on charges of violating his probation by having a gun and robbing a pizza delivery man last year.
The judge on Thursday let him withdraw his guilty plea in the May 2005 robbery but still sentenced him on the gun charge. The robbery trial is set for Sept. 18.
Even defense attorney H. Dohn Williams didn't understand why Tate would want to go to trial on the robbery charge, given that a conviction could bring a life sentence in addition to the 30 years for the probation violation.
Tate could have simply received 30 years total for both charges under the deal.
''He continues to get bad advice from meddling third parties,'' Williams said outside court.
Williams said Tate's mother, Florida Highway Patrol trooper Kathleen Grossett-Tate, has told him he could win an appeal on the probation violation conviction, win his robbery case and leave jail in a year. She left court without commenting.
Tate, now 19, was convicted of beating Tiffany Eunick to death in 1999, when he was 12.
His murder conviction was overturned by an appeals court in 2004 after the panel found it wasn't clear whether Tate understood the charges. He was freed from prison under a deal in which he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and was sentenced to 10 years' probation.
Williams pleaded with the judge for leniency, blaming Tate's criminal behavior on his upbringing.
''The death of Tiffany Eunick would never have occurred if there had been proper parental guidance and control,'' Williams said. ''Six-year-old Tiffany tragically died while ... roughhousing with a 6-year-old boy in a 12-year-old's body.''
Broward County Circuit Judge Joel T. Lazarus said Tate has shown ''disdain and disrespect'' for the law after repeated opportunities to redeem himself following his release from prison on the murder charge.
''In plain English, you've run out of chances. You do not get any more,'' the judge said.
Since his release from prison in 1999, Tate has had numerous encounters with police.
On Oct. 29, 2004, Lazarus sentenced Tate to an additional five years probation for having a knife. Tate was arrested on the robbery charge the next year, and while in custody was charged with criminal mischief for an altercation in jail.
Last month, Lazarus ruled for the second time that Tate was competent to face the robbery charge after Tate claimed he was mentally ill from years of abuse by his mother. He had claimed he was hearing voices and contemplating suicide, a story he later admitted was a ruse.
